Embroidered and PVC are the two patches we're asked to compare most often, and the honest answer is that they're built for different jobs rather than one being simply 'better'.
Embroidered patches are stitched thread over a twill backing. They read as classic and textured, work beautifully on jackets, uniforms and caps, and hold fine detail well at small sizes.
PVC patches are molded soft plastic in a raised 3D shape. They're fully waterproof, which makes them the better call for backpacks, outdoor gear and anything that sees rain or mud.
If your design leans on fine text or a vintage look, embroidered is usually the right call. If it needs bold color, a 3D pop, or has to survive the outdoors, PVC tends to win.
When embroidered makes more sense
- Uniforms, blazers and workwear that need a classic, professional look.
- Designs with fine detail or a vintage feel.
- Caps and jackets, where the texture of thread looks natural.
- When you want every backing option: embroidered patches can be sew-on, iron-on, velcro or adhesive.
When PVC makes more sense
- Backpacks, outdoor gear and anything that sees rain or mud: PVC is fully waterproof.
- Bold, colorful designs that should pop in 3D.
- Tactical and work gear, usually with velcro so patches can be swapped.
Can you order both?
Yes. There is no minimum order, so you can order a few of each and compare them on your own gear. Both get a free digital proof first, and both ship 7–10 business days after you approve it.
Embroidered vs PVC: common questions
Which one costs more?
It depends on size, coverage and quantity. At the same size, PVC usually costs a little more per patch than embroidered. Tell us both options and your budget, and we will price them side by side within 24 hours.
Which one lasts longer?
Both are made to last. PVC shrugs off water and mud; embroidered patches hold up wash after wash when sewn on and washed inside out.
Which is better for caps?
Both work. Embroidered gives a classic textured look; PVC gives a bold, raised 3D finish. You can preview either on a cap on our Customize page.
