The right size depends on where the patch goes and how far away people will see it. A patch that looks perfect on a cap can disappear on a jacket back, and fine text that is crisp at 5 inches can blur at 2.
Try it before you order
On our Customize page you can upload your design and preview it at 2, 3, 4 and 5 inches on a cap, T-shirt, jacket or backpack, placed at the left chest, right chest, sleeve or back. It is the quickest way to see what size reads well. Need something bigger or smaller? We make patches from cap size up to a full jacket back; just put the size in your quote.
Common placements
| Placement | Typical use | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Cap front panel | Brand logos, team marks | Curved, limited height; bold shapes work best |
| Left chest | Company and school logos, uniforms | Small size: keep text short and bold |
| Right chest | Name patches and name tapes | Usually a simple rectangle with lettering |
| Sleeve / shoulder | Flags, unit and club patches | Velcro if you want to swap them |
| Jacket back | Club back patches, large artwork | Large and visible from a distance |
| Bags and backpacks | Brand marks, collections | PVC for gear that gets wet |
Size and detail go together
Small patches lose detail first. If your design has fine lettering, either make the patch larger or choose a technique that holds small text well: woven patches have a flatter finish made for small text and fine lines, and embroidered patches also hold detail well at small sizes. For a cap, 3D puff embroidery and leather are popular because they stand out on the front panel.
Shapes
Patches do not have to be round or square. Custom shapes are available, and a laser-cut edge suits complex or irregular outlines. A merrowed edge gives the classic rolled-thread border, and a hot-cut edge gives a sealed border with no visible stitching.
Bigger patches, different backings
Large back patches are usually sewn on for permanence. Sleeve and gear patches often use velcro so they can be moved. See How to Choose a Patch Backing for the details.
When you request a quote, give us the size you have in mind and where it is going. If the design needs a different size to stay crisp, your free digital proof is where we will tell you.
How to pick your size in three steps
- Measure the space. Measure the spot on the garment or bag in inches: the cap front panel, the chest area, the sleeve, or the jacket back.
- Preview it. Upload your design on the Customize page and switch between 2, 3, 4 and 5 inches on the product and placement you chose.
- Check the details. Look at the smallest text and thinnest lines at that size. If they are hard to read on screen, go up a size or pick a technique that holds fine detail.
Matching the patch type to the placement
- Caps: 3D puff embroidery, leather or PVC stand out on a front panel.
- Chest logos on uniforms: embroidered or woven patches.
- Names: name patches and name tapes on the right chest.
- Sleeves: flag patches and unit patches, often on velcro.
- Jacket backs: club back patches and rockers or large chenille pieces.
Size questions
Can I order a patch bigger than 5 inches?
Yes. The customizer previews 2 to 5 inches, but we make patches from cap size up to a full jacket back. Put the size you need in your quote.
Can I order the same design in two sizes?
Tell us the sizes and quantities you need in your quote request and we will quote and proof them together.
Do you help choose a size?
Yes. Tell us where the patch is going, and your free digital proof will flag anything that will not read well at your chosen size.
